Snow in DC

When winter storm Jonas is at peak blizzard conditions on the East Coast this weekend, it's best to stay inside

But you can still take some awesome photos of snowflakes from the warmth inside your home. And once the winds die down and it's safe to venture out, you can snap some gorgeous pictures out in the snow.

It helps to know just a little bit about the science behind snowflake formation.

Kenneth Libbrecht, a physics professor at Caltech, has studied snow crystal formation for years. He also takes incredible photos of snowflakes, which he's even compiled into several booksLibbrecht shared a few tips with Tech Insider on how to do what he does.

First, it's important to understand what kind of flakes you might see based on the temperature and humidity outside. There's actually lots of different kinds.

The Weather Channel is predicting that it will hover in the upper 20s (F) with humidity ranging between 60% and 100% in both D.C. and New York during the peak of the storm on Saturday.
